“I am the way, the truth, the light!” Those words are attributed to Jesus in the Gospel of John. It seems such a clear and powerful statement of who Jesus was and knew himself to be. Why is it that the only Gospel it appears in?

The truth is, what Jesus says varies from Gospel to Gospel; even what Jesus does changes in each account. The Gospel of John was written by an anonymous author in the year 100 CE, some 70 years after Jesus’s death on the cross. It is not historical documentation of the life and words of Jesus. It is a narrative story of who people understood Jesus to be some 70 years after his death. With that understanding, we can find our way to the Spiritual meaning of Jesus’ life for us today in 2021 CE.
