Some moments in life shake us to our core— many of us feel we are living through such a time right now. Political and social upheaval, crisis, and uncertainty when it seems like the very fabric of our world is unraveling. Wars raging, political gamesmanship, economic unrest, and personal struggles leave us questioning everything we thought we knew. In these moments, it is easy to wonder: Where is God?
Some may feel God is absent, silent, or asleep at the wheel. Others may question whether the idea of a divine presence is even relevant in today’s world. And yet, in Unity, we affirm as our First Principle: There is only one Presence and one Power in the Universe and in my life, God the Good, Omnipotent.
But how do we know this to be true when life presents so much evidence to the contrary? How do we experience this One Power when the world feels chaotic, unfair, or even cruel?
The Wrestling Match
For many of us, the image of God we were given as children—a bearded man in the sky, a distant judge, a cosmic wish-granter—simply doesn’t hold up in the face of real-life suffering. If God is a loving Father, then why do bad things happen to good people? If God is all-powerful, then why does injustice persist?
These questions are not a sign of weakness but of spiritual evolution. Just as Jacob wrestled with the angel and left with a new name, Israel, we, too, are called to wrestle with our old ideas of God and emerge with a deeper, more authentic understanding.
This wrestling is where our greatest spiritual growth happens. It forces us to release outdated beliefs and forge a consciousness that aligns with a God that is not distant, not punishing, not removed from our lives—but is instead the very essence of life itself.
God Is, Even When…
What if God is not an external force controlling events, but the very breath we breathe, the intelligence behind creation, the love that binds us together?
God is the power within us that allows us to rise after loss, to love despite heartbreak, to seek justice even in the face of opposition. God is present in every act of kindness, in the resilience of the human spirit, in the quiet strength that carries us through life’s storms.
God is, even when:
- The world seems unfair.
- People act out of fear and ignorance.
- We don’t feel a clear answer to our prayers.
- We are overwhelmed by uncertainty.
God is not a being out there, deciding who wins or loses. God is the unshakable presence within us, calling us to love, to act, to be the presence of peace in the world.
From Belief to Knowing
At some point, our spiritual journey moves beyond belief and into knowing. Belief is intellectual—what we were taught, what we hope to be true. Knowing comes from experience. It is the unshakable awareness that we are never separate from God, no matter what is happening around us.
We cultivate this knowing in stillness. In prayer and meditation. In moments of deep connection with others. In the choice to see the sacred in all things.
This is not a passive process. It is an active, ongoing commitment. Every time we choose faith over fear, love over hate, and trust over doubt, we reaffirm the truth of Unity’s First Principle. We stop asking, Where is God? and instead begin to see: God is here. God is now. God is in me, as me, through me.
A Call to Consciousness
In this day and age, we are not called to return to an old concept of God. We are called to awaken to a new one. To step into the radical truth that God is not missing, but moving—in the collective rising of consciousness, in the healing work of justice, in the infinite potential within each of us.
The question is not Where is God? but Where am I in my awareness of God?
God is. And we are. The power and presence of the Divine, made manifest in this moment, in this world, in this life.
The choice is ours. Will we awaken to it?
