A diagnosis may tell us something important about the body, but it cannot tell us everything about the person. Our age may tell us how many years we have lived, but it cannot determine how fully we can live today. Labels can be useful, but when we mistake a description for a destiny, labels become limits.
In Beyond Belief, Nir Eyal draws a meaningful distinction between sickness and illness: sickness is experienced in the body, while illness includes the interpretation the mind creates around that experience. A physical condition may be real and require compassionate, appropriate medical care. But then the mind begins adding to the diagnosis: “My life will always be defined by this. My best days are behind me. I am powerless over what happens next.”
This does not mean we caused our sickness through faulty thinking, nor does it suggest that illness is evidence of spiritual failure. It means that we can acknowledge what is happening in the body without surrendering our identity or our future to it.
This idea is deeply connected to the teaching of Vibrant Health in Unapologetic Manifestation. Vibrant health is not pretending that nothing is wrong. It is refusing to make what is wrong the only truth about us. We care for the body while continuing to affirm the life, vitality, wisdom, and wholeness of Spirit expressing through us.
The labels we place on aging can be just as restrictive. “I’m too old.” “It’s too late.” “People my age cannot change.” Yet at 66, I became a first-time author. My age did not disqualify me; it gave me the experience, insight, and spiritual depth to write the book only I could write. Aging tells us how long we have lived. It does not tell us what is still possible.
This is the power of agency. Agency does not mean controlling everything that happens. It means consciously participating in what happens next—and prayer is one of the ways we participate. We can pray when we are confident and when we are frightened, when our faith is strong and when we are filled with doubt. Prayer does not require the absence of uncertainty; it creates an opening larger than our uncertainty.
Join us this Sunday for the conclusion of our Beyond Belief series, “Labels Are Limits.”Together, we will release the labels that confine us and reclaim our power to participate in our health, our growth, and the unfolding possibilities of our lives.
