Unity San Francisco stands proud this Black History Month to spotlight the profound contributions of Black theologians. We have looked at the rich teachings of Howard Thurman, Bayard Ruskin, Tiferet Berenbaum, and this week, we dive into the work of a figure who stands out among these luminaries: Alice Walker, the brilliant mind behind the timeless masterpiece The Color Purple.
Within the pages of The Color Purple, Alice Walker weaves a narrative of profound depth, where spiritual lessons resonate with every turn. Beginning with the poignant words “Dear God,” each section of the novel delves into the complexities of human faith, resilience, strength, and the Divine.
Sadly, today, we can find our choice to spotlight Black History called into question. We at Unity San Francisco stand unapologetic in our commitment to inclusivity and hold fast to the truth that all history deserves recognition. In seeking to learn of all people’s struggles, triumphs, and enduring spirit, we enrich our collective consciousness and lift the entire planet.
Just as we glean wisdom from the stories in scripture of ancient civilizations and distant lands, the narratives of people of color we share this country with offer invaluable lessons for us all. While our individual ancestry may not be traced back to Egypt, Rome, Africa, or Palestine, stories of resilience and perseverance resonate across cultures and generations.
Through embracing the diversity of human experience, we uncover profound spiritual truths that transcend the boundaries of race and ethnicity. This Sunday, join us as we embark on a journey into the heart of The Color Purple, discovering the spiritual gems nestled within its pages.
In exploring this groundbreaking work, we celebrate the richness of human experience, the resilience of the human spirit, and the invaluable lessons that shape our collective journey. Together, let us honor the past, embrace the present, and pave the way for a future rooted in unity and understanding.
