At Unity San Francisco, we believe that spiritual growth and social awakening go hand in hand. As we approach Juneteenth—the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States—we pause to honor the resilience, dignity, and power of Black Americans who endured and overcame unimaginable injustice.
Juneteenth marks the day, June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War and the liberation of enslaved people—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It reminds us that freedom delayed is still injustice, and that truth must be proclaimed and lived out for liberation to be real.
In Unity, we affirm the Divine within every person. We know that all people are created in the image and likeness of God, and we are each here to express our full spiritual potential. Juneteenth invites us to look honestly at the legacy of racism and commit ourselves to a deeper, more inclusive freedom—one that is not just political or historical, but spiritual and communal.
This Sunday, we will celebrate Juneteenth with prayer, reflection, and music that honors the journey toward liberation. We invite you to join us—not only in remembrance but in recommitment: to live our Unity principles boldly, to dismantle systems of separation, and to walk together in love, justice, and equality.
Let us be a community where everyone’s freedom is sacred.
