Who We Are

It is our joy to welcome you to our spiritual community.

Our Message

Unity San Francisco has been a proud presence of progressive spirituality since 1919, and in that time our message of positive, practical spiritual living has resonated with people of all backgrounds and faith traditions.

When you walk through our doors, you will be warmly welcomed and accepted exactly as you are. Poet and author Maya Angelou’s journey as a lifelong Truth student began at our church in the 1950s. The powerful message she received—God loves me—is one of the hallmarks of our theology and the Truth we live and love to share.

If you think of yourself as spiritual but not religious, you’ll surely feel at home at Unity San Francisco. We understand that many have not had an experience of religion as positive, loving, and accepting. At Unity, we embrace the best aspects of religion—faith, devotion, service—and leave behind the dogma and rigidity that have left some people feeling judged and marginalized.

At Unity San Francisco, we want you to come as you are – and grow into who you are becoming.

100 Years of Unity San Francisco

Our Services

Our Sunday experience is celebratory, with a rotation of world-class singers and instrumentalists who raise the roof while lifting spirits; the minister’s passionate and inspiring message; a centering meditation; affirmative prayer with our Prayer Chaplains; and many chances for hugs, handshakes, and fellowship.

Our commitment to spiritual growth doesn’t end on Sunday!  Throughout the week, you’ll find many opportunities to spend time with fellow seekers by taking part in a continually changing, vibrant, and varied array of classes and workshops, all designed to encourage spiritual growth and deepening.  At Unity San Francisco, we know that we’re spiritual beings having a human experience, and we love to grow, laugh, and learn together.

Mission, Vision, and Core Values

What is Unity San Francisco all about?

God is not in you in the same sense that a raisin is in a bun … God is in you as the ocean is in a wave.

Unity Minister and Author

Our Mission

We pray, celebrate, serve, and connect to inspire and transform ourselves and our world.

Our Vision

We are a vibrant spiritual community that honors the Divine Presence in all, and radiates the Unity message through loving service.

Our Core Values

As a spiritually conscious community, we practice the Five Unity Principles through these core values:

  • Love: God is Love.  We consciously choose Love in every situation.
  • Inclusivity: We welcome and embrace all as expressions of the Divine.
  • Joy: Joy is our true nature.  It is what we bring to the celebration of life, independent of circumstance.
  • Prayer and Meditation: We faithfully turn within to connect with Infinite Wisdom.
  • Service: We experience personal growth and self-realization as we intentionally give of our time, talent, and treasure in service to our community and the world.

The Five Unity Principles for Unity San Francisco

There is only One Presence and One Power active as the Universe and in my life: God.

God is all that there is, everywhere present and the absolute good in everything.  This transcendent God is not an old man watching from a cloud, showering us with blessings or discipline when the mood strikes, but the field of intelligence, love, and creative energy in which we live.  We can never be separate from the Divine Presence.

We are Divinity in expression, and therefore we are inherently good.

Like a wave is made wholly of the ocean, we are made wholly of God.  Divinity is our True Identity.

We create with our thoughts and beliefs.

We create our reality through thoughts held in mind.  Drawing from an unlimited field of possibility, or God-Mind, we create our experience by where we place our focus and belief.

Through prayer and meditation, we align our heart-mind with God.

Affirmative Prayer is a process of creative thinking that heightens and aligns our mind’s connection with God-Mind, and through that greater alignment, brings forth greater wholeness, abundant good, and enhancement of our life purpose and our full spiritual expression.  Thus, prayer is not seen as a technique for changing and persuading God, but for expanding and changing our minds.

Through thoughts, words, and actions, we live in the Truth we know.

Unity emphasizes practical spirituality – that is, the importance of actually applying and demonstrating Truth Principles in our daily thoughts and actions.  Reading, studying, and discussing these principles is inspiring, but these acts alone are not enough.  We believe that we must walk our talk daily as we practice our faith and release judgment of ourselves and others.
