Many people quietly stop themselves from praying because they think they do not have enough faith. They believe they need complete certainty, spiritual confidence, or unwavering belief before prayer can “work.” But what if that isn’t true?
What if prayer works not because we are spiritually perfect, but because prayer itself begins transforming us?
In Unity, we teach that affirmative prayer is not about convincing God to change circumstances. It is about changing consciousness. Prayer is not cosmic negotiation with an unwilling universe. Prayer is alignment. It is the intentional practice of turning our awareness toward possibility, healing, abundance, and wholeness—even before all the evidence appears.
Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed could move mountains. A mustard seed is tiny. That tells me the invitation is not to begin with giant faith. The invitation is simply to plant the seed.
That is why I love the idea explored in Nir Eyal’s work Beyond Belief: sometimes practices transform us before complete belief arrives. We do not wait to become strong before going to the gym. We go to the gym to build strength. In the same way, sometimes we pray our way into faith.
Affirmative prayer interrupts the unconscious “negative prayers” many of us repeat every day:
“I’m not enough.”
“There’s never enough.”
“I always fail.”
“I’m not enough.”
“There’s never enough.”
“I always fail.”
Prayer becomes powerful when we consciously choose another possibility.
So this Sunday, we will explore what it means to pray like we mean it—not perfectly, not without doubt, but with intention, willingness, and participation in the life we want to cultivate.
Because sometimes the smallest seed of faith can begin transforming an entire life.
Join us this Sunday at 11am in person or online at Unity San Francisco as we explore Faith, Doubt, and the Power of Consciousness together.
